Prolotherapy is a technique that is used to treat painful ligaments. Those ligaments often have become too lax because of an injury and it is that laxity that causes the pain. Basically, an irritant substance (such as 50% Glucose) is injected into the affected ligaments to produce an inflammatory response. The subsequent healing process causes a tightening of the ligaments and therefore improves the pain. This inflammatory response may cause some temporary discomfort, which is usually well controlled with pain medications. It is important not to take any antiinflammatory medication (such as aspirin, cortisone, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc ...) during this period as this would defeat the purpose

One should however continue aspirin that has been prescribed for a heart or neurological condition. A prolotherapy treatment session last several weeks, with injections being repeated every couple of weeks until a positive response is obtained. Those injections are done in the office
.The patient will need a driver to go back home. Dr. Amaral can be contacted for further information.
