Spine Surgery : Endoscopic Discectomy

This is essentially similar to the standard microdiscectomy except that it uses a small tube to get down to the disc and an endoscope rather than a microscope.

The advantage is that the skin incision is smaller. The disadvantage is that there is less room to maneuver in case of problems such as bleeding.

One still goes around the nerve roots as in the standard microdiscectomy procedure and therefore still creates scar. Retraction of the nerve root is still necessary.

Post-operative care is essentially similar as in the case of the standard microdiscectomy. Heavy lifting is to be avoided for 3 months after surgery.
